Seniors experiencing a loss of autonomy
Accessible parking permits: What you need to know
If you have a condition resulting in a loss of autonomy or that makes it difficult for you to travel short distances without a health or safety risk, you can apply for an accessible parking permit. Here’s how to obtain a permit and how to use it.
How to obtain an accessible parking permit
You must apply for an accessible parking permit by completing the form provided on the website of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ or licence bureau) and pay the applicable fees.
If you have a driver’s licence with condition P or if you use a wheelchair on a permanent basis, you don’t have to provide additional documents. In most other cases, you must include a medical form with your application.
How to use an accessible parking permit
You can use your parking permit if you’re the driver or passenger in a vehicle.
You must hang the permit from the rear-view mirror so that it’s visible from outside the vehicle.
The permit comes with a certificate, which you must carry with you when using the permit.
The permit is issued in your name and belongs to you alone. This means you can’t lend or give it to anyone else.
If you no longer need the permit, you must mail it back to the SAAQ along with the attestation certificate.
You must also inform the SAAQ of any change of address.
Replacing a lost or stolen permit
If you lose your permit or it’s stolen, you must mail an application for a replacement permit to the SAAQ. Replacement fees apply.
Allow two weeks (10 business days) processing time. You can’t use any accessible parking spaces until you receive your new parking permit.
